Book launch: "Drawn in: Drawings and eyewitness accounts from Ravensbrück and Neuengamme"

How did concentration camp prisoners record everyday life in the camp, themselves and their fellow prisoners, experiences of forced labour, violence and death on paper? Who are these drawings aimed at, who do they speak to today? What does it mean to show one's own stories or those of others and to put them on paper?

In her lecture, Christiane Heß (Hamburg Memorials Foundation) will present her research on the visual ego documents from the Ravensbrück and Neuengamme camps. Using selected drawings, she will discuss the different conditions under which the images were produced, the options available to the artists and the dissemination of the images after 1945 - always with a view to the social dimension. In analysing these images, it becomes clear how important it is to engage in mediation work that critically examines the visual vocabulary.
