“Unsung Heroes in the Classroom” – Online information session on an innovative approach to Nazi history

Professional development event for teachers at schools in Lower Saxony

How can the history of National Socialism be taught in the classroom in a way that is not only academically sound but also effective and engaging for pupils? This question is at the heart of the digital information session ‘Silent Heroes in the Classroom’.

The focus is on a joint project between the NLQ and the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation (SnG). An interactive digital map brings to light examples of acts of resistance in everyday life in Nazi Germany. This socio-historical approach opens up new perspectives on individual scope for action and, at the same time, enables links to be made with current issues.

Building on this, a workshop concept is presented that focuses on inquiry-based learning: pupils independently research further examples of “silent heroism” and actively expand the digital map. This fosters a deeper, independent understanding of historical contexts.

The event is aimed in particular at teachers who act as multipliers. It offers insights into didactic approaches, concrete implementation options, and space for questions and discussion.

Three sessions with identical content are offered – participation is flexible and possible on any of the following dates:

  • 24 August
  • 31 August
  • 1 September

The project and the digital information session ‘Silent Heroes in the Classroom’ are being run as a collaboration between the Lower Saxony State Institute for School Quality Development (NLQ) and the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation (SnG).
