Our work

Our mission is to promote and further develop the culture of remembrance of the history and crimes of National Socialism in the state of Lower Saxony. We support memorials, initiatives and other organisations that are dedicated to researching, documenting and communicating Nazi history, including its prehistory and post-history, and commemorating the victims of Nazi crimes.

We are working on this

In addition to providing financial support, advice and training for places of remembrance of Nazi history and initiatives, we are also involved in the areas of research and documentation as well as education, mediation and outreach. Our archival collection and specialised library with a focus on regional Nazi history are available to all interested parties (by appointment). We make the concerns and themes of the Nazi-related landscape of remembrance in Lower Saxony visible and are available as contacts and advisors for local authorities, academia and civil society.

    Landscape of remembrance

    Since the 1980s, a memorial landscape of regional depth, national appeal and international significance has emerged in Lower Saxony, consisting of more than 20 sites with a historical connection to Nazi crimes that is unique in Germany.

    The staff of the "Lower Saxony Memorials Development Department" are available as contacts for places of remembrance of the Nazi era, associations and initiatives, research, individuals, Monument Conservation authorities, local authorities and educational organisations.

    The "Lower Saxony Memorials Development Department" makes the concerns and themes of the Nazi-related landscape of remembrance visible and supports them through education, mediation and outreach programmes.
