Initiatives, associations and history workshops

Together with the institutionalised memorial sites, a large number of initiatives, projects, history workshops and individuals form the backbone of Lower Saxony's landscape of remembrance.

Civil society engagement

The diverse activities of civil society actors include city tours, exhibitions, discussions with contemporary witnesses, writing workshops, publications and document collections.

Many initiatives and associations have also organised themselves into regional memory networks such as Network Remembrance and Future in the Hanover Region e.V. or Network Topography of Remembrance - Commemoration and Remembrance in Southern Lower Saxony have joined forces.

Interest group of Lower Saxony memorials and initiatives to commemorate Nazi crimes

The interest group (IG) sees itself as a forum for the entire range of activities in remembrance of Nazi crimes in Lower Saxony. It enables institutions, initiatives and individuals who work primarily in the field of remembrance of Nazi crimes to become active members and others who wish to support the IG to become passive members.

It has a spokesperson who is elected every two years and who represents the IG on the Foundation Board of the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation.

Association of Memorials in Germany e.V. / FORUM (VGDF)

The VGDF is a nationwide association of currently nine regional working groups, the Memorial Museums Department of the Topography of Terror and the AG KZ-Gedenkstätten ("Concentration camp memorials"). The aim of the association is to promote a nationwide exchange of experience and information between memorials and commemorative initiatives and to strengthen cooperation with all relevant actors in the culture of remembrance and historical-political education in order to strengthen the professionalism of the institutions.

The association sees itself as a representative of interests vis-à-vis politics, the media and business and wants to endeavour to improve public perception.
