Memorial sites

Since the 1980s, a unique memorial landscape of regional depth, national appeal and international significance has emerged in Lower Saxony and Bremen, consisting of over 20 sites with historical links to Nazi crimes.

Memorial sites provide special access to the history of National Socialism. At historical sites and using a wealth of historical documents and contemporary witnesses, visitors can learn about the persecution, victims, perpetrators and structures of responsibility. In Lower Saxony, the variety of memorials and places of learning comprehensively and exemplarily covers all major topics of National Socialist crimes committed in the various types of forced labour camps, prisons and hospitals. There are also places of learning for the Nazi regime's propagandistic self-presentation, which served as a means of ideological penetration and mobilisation of society.

In 2000, the privately funded memorial sites and history initiatives formed the Lower Saxony Memorials and Initiatives for the Remembrance of Nazi Crimes in 2000. in 2000.
